Client Spotlight: Michael Ryland - 125 Pounds Down and Quickly Becoming a Great Runner

Michael came to me last year when I had first launched Liberty Fitness. Beginning at over 340 pounds, Michael was determined to make a change for his health, happiness, and longevity.

Michael quickly adapted to new habits like staying hydrated and prioritizing protein. Shifting from frequent takeout to whole foods left him feeling fuller than he was used to - but as the pounds dropped, his motivation only grew.

Michael now:

  • 🍽️ Plans ahead and makes his own food.

  • 🚶 Walks everywhere and I can't remember the last time he missed his step goal.

  • 💪 Has real confidence in the gym by consistently submitting form videos for feedback and fine-tuning his technique.

Michael has been an ideal client not only in his determination to follow the plan I set for him, but in his willingness to expand his horizons and take advantage of all the resources I offer as a coach:

  • 📚 Michael joined my book club (@wwmd.book.club), where we train the mind alongside the body. I've seen him grow tremendously in his ability to handle stress and view life's challenges as opportunities - a key Stoic principle.

  • 👟 Michael joined also joined my run club (@hull.sunday.run.day) and has become an important member, running along side the gang with a smile each week.

Michael ran his first sub-30 5K at Ottawa Race Weekend and has since surpassed 10K, with the Army Run next. From limited movement to hybrid athlete — he’s unlocked a whole new level of freedom.

With changing demands in Michael’s life, we adapted his training - starting in a condo gym, progressing to a commercial space, and shifting from a 4-day split to a strength-focused 3-day plan he still follows and makes progress with today.

As Michael’s year with me comes to a close, I’m proud to see him equipped with the systems, habits, and mindset to keep progressing on his own. Coaching isn’t always forever - but the principles, when truly learned, last a lifetime.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate Michael and his partner Victoria (who is also a member of our growing book club) on their engagement. Truly a tremendous year for these two.

Thank you for your year, Michael. May your life continue to grow and flourish with your newfound sense of purpose and determination.

Upwards and onwards.
